Susan Stryker is associate professor of gender and women's studies, and director of the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. She is the author of several books on transgender and queer topics, most recently Transgender History (2008).
Stryker's first book, Gay by the Bay: A History of Queer Culture in the San Francisco Bay Area (Chronicle Books 1996), coauthored with Jim Van Buskirk, is an illustrated account of the evolution of LGBT culture in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. This book and its successor, Queer Pulp, were each nominated for a Lambda Literary Award.

’92 was born in 1961 and earned her bachelor’s degree in letters from the University of Oklahoma in 1983 before receiving her doctorate in history from UC Berkeley. In less than a decade, however, Stryker’s graduation from Cal would quickly become the first of many awards, honors, and recognitions she garnered in her career as a professor, author, filmmaker, and Susan Stryker received her PhD in U.S. History at UC Berkeley in 1992. Her dissertation was on the origins of Mormonism as a case study in the formation of identity-based communities. She subsequently worked on the history of sexuality- and gender-based communities.
In 2006, Routledge’s The Transgender Studies Reader brought together the first definitive collection of the field. Since its publication, the field has seen an explosion of new work that has expanded the boundaries of inquiry in many directions.
Susan Stryker is Associate Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies, as well as the former director of the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. She is the author of many articles and several books on transgender and queer topics. She won a Lambda Literary Award for the anthology The Transgender Studies Reader (Routledge), and an Emmy Award for the documentary film
